Baked Ribs and Sauerkraut

3 lbs spareribs or country-style ribs
4 cups sauerkraut undrained
2 tart apples peeled and chopped
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
2 Tbsp firmly packed brown sugar
1 small onion
!/4 cup water

Heat oven to 450 degrees cut ribs into serving pieces. Place in
13 x 9 in pan. Season with salt and pepper. Bake uncovered for 20
minutes. Reduce temp to 350 degrees. Remove ribs; drain fat from
pan. In same pan combine sauerkraut, brown sugar, apples, onions
and water; spread evenly. Arrange ribs on top. Bake uncovered
for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until ribs are tender stirring occasionally.
